My name is Robert John McConnell. I live in Bangor Co.Down N.Ireland.
I am interested in developing my family tree & I would like to make contact with relatives of mine in N.Ireland, the UK or any other country.
My parents were John Henry (Jack) McConnell & Margaret nee Markey. My mother was born in Keady Co.Armagh. Her parents were Ellen McKenna & John Markey. Ellen came from Granemore near Keady & John was born in Co.Monaghan in the townland of Tavenaskea. They were married in 1911 & lived in the village of Darkley.
My father was born in Belfast. He served in the 1st World War with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He was one of the 'Old Contemptibles' and he fought at the Somme. He was transferred from the Skins to the Machine Gun Corps in 1916. His parents were James McConnell from Carrickfergus & Margaret Eva Ryan from Woolwich near London. Margaret's parents were John Ryan who was born in Gibraltar in 1839. Her mother was Elizabeth nee Cook & Hartfield. Many of Margaret's male relatives served in the Royal Artillery including her father & grandfather as well as 3 brothers: John James, Thomas Henry & Frederick Edgar Ryan. John & Thomas served in the Boer War & WW1 while Fred.served in WW1.
During my family history research I found out that a great uncle of mine George McConnell served as a missionary in China in the 1890s.Born in Carrickfergus, Co.Antrim in 1864, George went to live & work in Scotland. He was a devout Christian and served as a Home Missionary first in Glasgow & then in Dundee. In 1890 he went to China to work as a missionary with the China Inland Mission (now OMF). His fiance was Isabella Gray from Lochee near Dundee. Isabella followed George to China 2 years later & they were married there in 1894. They had 2 children May & Kenneth. George & Bella did wonderful work for the Lord in China. I am researching this work & their lives with a view to writing their biography. I am trying to obtain as much information on them as possible before embarking on this project.
